The birch mires at the margins of Huidankeidas (Haapakeidas)
In the Haapakeidas area, there occurs commonly forested mires that grow birch. These occur mainly in the margins of larger raised bogs. The broad-leaved forest in a nutrient-poor environment can be largely attributed to the great forest fire of 1959, which burned 1700 hectares of forests and mires in the area. The nutrients set free by the fire have helped broad-leaved trees to start growing in places usually favoured by scotch pine. Part of the birch forest growth can also be attributed to drainage work done around large mires.
