The Aitoneva mire regeneration site (Aitoneva)

The modern energy peat industry in Finland was born in Aitoneva during the Second World War. Finland had a deficiency of energy sources, which led to the development of methods for utilising peat as an energy source to replace coal. Since then, peat has been used to this day, especially in heat plants in cities. The environmental trail at Aitoneva runs across a former peat mine that was finished in the 1950s. Since then, mire vegetation has returned to the site, showing sedges in waterlogged areas and all kinds of moss on drier benches.
