The raised bog of Mustansaarenkeidas (Haapakeidas)

The mire complex of Mustansaarenkeidas consists of several raised bogs, aapa mires, ponds and forest islands. In front of the observation tower, you can see abundant muddy hollows alternating with drier mossy ridges. The scenery at Mustasaarenkeidas was typical of large parts of Finland some 100 years ago, but drainage of mires for forests has changed the landscape for good. Only a few large entities of mire and forest mosaics have been preserved to this day in Southern Finland, many of them in our Geopark.
